Back in the saddle with the daily warm-ups ( for today any way…gads I’m busy-like).
Any way, I wondered what a metro-sexual, Starbucks drinking, chain-smoker would look like….in a zombified state.
Not sure I did it justice with this quick treatment, but hey….
This was executed in acrylic on illustration board.

The Lava Elves cometh...
Today’s installment is the latest artwork completed for Dragon Dice.
The Lava Elves!
This week I am assembling a lesson plan for a university illustration course.
The challenge will be in creating assignments designed to teach the elements of good illustration to students who may not have had extensive training in drawing and painting at the university level.
The students who’ve signed up for the course surely feel up to the challenge, so I am not nervous about it, but I do want to be certain that they get the most they can out of the course.
This weekend was spent exhibiting art at OGC ( Open Gaming Convention) alongside my buddy, Don Higgins of “Dark Magic and Donuts“.
Many laughs were had. Of that you may be certain. :)
Now it is time to proceed to the day’s work.
The paintings don’t finish themselves, sadly…lazy sods…..
Yesterday saw me out in the sun most of the day applying graphics to a box van and not in the air conditioned confines of my studio, sadly. No time for blog posting!
But today sees me back in the studio ( at least for a few minutes) so I can share this new painting with you for Dragon Dice! This one features the Coral Elves.
It is 18×30 inches on Strathmore 500 vellum finish illustration board.
Acrylics.
Yum.

This is the first of three images that debuted at GenCon for the upcoming new line of Dragon Dice gaming products. I’ll post the other two over the next couple of days.
This one is 16×24 inches in size and has inspired me to work larger from here on.

I do love me some big dragons. This one received some nice compliments from con-goers. The level of detail on the dragon in particular won high praise. I credit working larger with allowing me to invest plenty of detail in this fellow.
It is great having plenty of room for brushwork. I have put away the jeweler’s loop and my 0000000000000 sized brush ( fashioned from my own eyelashes—it’ll be great to have them grow back).

These were executed in acrylic which has become my preferred medium for just about everything. These were done for Headless Hydra Games.
GenCon was a fantastic time as always.
I sold some artwork and met some new art directors who seem genuinely interested in my work. My new paintings were well-received.
I was awarded the “Doug Kovacs Award” by Wayne Reynolds for being Doug Kovacs.
It makes sense if you don’t think about it…

It is sort of like the Marvel “No Prize”, but an honor none the less….now I just need to grow a rockin’ goatee….
The sketchbook was a critical success amongst my friends in the art show. Made a few trades and gifted a few. None sold in the art show to con-goers, but I am not at all disappointed. The book looked great. It arrived at the hotel on time and it was exciting to have it gracing my booth.
I will set up a sales page for the book this week I think. Might as well make it available at a low price for whomever might like it. :)

GenCon fast approaches and I will soon be packing the vehicle with paintings, prints, and a new addition to my offerings—sketchbooks!
I assembled a 20 page full color sketchbook featuring my favorite daily warm-ups.
It is 8.5 inches square, perfect bound and…did I mention it’s full color? I am going through Lulu for this first volume. I had to have the books shipped directly to the hotel to be certain I had them for the convention.
Can’t wait to see how they turned out!
If all goes well, I will offer them for sale at the show ( available with remark) and eventually through Lulu. I’ll post a preview of the book when it’s ready.

We interviewed Marcin Migdal of Sketchoholic.com to learn about the art community over there along with its many features. It is a very cool place and worth a visit!
Some of my fellow Ninja Mountain panelists ( Drew Baker, Kieran Yanner, and Ralph Horsley) will also be in Indianapolis and we hope to gather to do a bit of podcasting and plenty of hanging out. If you’re in town, come and say howdy, if you get a chance!

Have things ever been busy around here of late!
These past twenty days have been crazy! On the schedule were:
The three illustrations you see at the top were part of the Annual Exhibition, in fact. I was very pleased that the judges saw fit to include them in the show!
They are from a series of illustrations I did for Headless Hydra Games.
Now I am finishing off the coloring wall design, sketching for some other projects and preparing for GenCon!
I have a bunch of stuff to have printed up! Bookmarks, post cards, promo sheets, and business cards. Prints to sell.
I have to mat a bunch of pieces for the convention.
My booth this year will have four panels and two tables. There should be plenty to display…and hopefully people will be interested in purchasing some of my originals. Fingers crossed. :)
Zombie Shaman
Friday seemed like a zombie kind of day.
I saw a photo of a shaman in a National Geographic today and in the same issue a picture of a mummified head. These images seemed ripe for immediate combination into a new theme.
Magazines like National Geographic and Smithsonian are awesome for getting inspiration on the fly.

In The Tree
Another day, another daily.
This theme is one I often re-visit.
Gnarly old trees just hold so much potential…as do the barely noticeable cats that seem to populate them in my imagination.
We’ll be recording the next episode of the Ninja Mountain Podcast this afternoon.
Can’t wait to chat with the gang again.
In the meantime, there is much painting to be done. :)
