Red Roots
Well, yesterday was an exciting day for me as I began to more earnestly promote this new website along with the release from Paizo ( see yesterday’s post).
I’ve been receiving some great feedback on my new painted work, which has been very gratifying for me.
I’d been nervous about the new direction in my work and to find that people are responding favorably towards it has been a huge relief.
I think my jitters were caused by putting so much more of myself into each piece. More time, more everything.
As such, more seems to be on the line for me with each assignment.
It is striking how much more precious I am towards my work of late.
I guess it’s the difference between spending hours on a piece and spending several days on a painting.
Here’s hoping that taking things more personally with my work will also make me a better professional or at least more passionate about it…
It’s been a while since I’ve been this nervous about my work. I like the feeling.
Well, onto the next project!
I produced a series of illustrations for Paizo’s newest book release, ” Pathfinder Chronicles: Classic Treasures Revisited”.
It hit their catalog today and is available for sale at the company website.
I was very excited to work on this book as I am a long-time fan of Dungeons and Dragons.
The treasures detailed in this book bring back many happy memories to my most nerdly heart. :)
I was granted the opportunity to illustrate the chapters on the “Bag of Holding” and the “Deck of Many Things”.
You would have to be a fan of the game to have any inkling of what those things are, but, if you do, then you know why I was smiling from ear to ear when I received my assignments.
Equally exciting to me was the opportunity to work with traditional media on a major studio project.
I’d been hinting at this work for some time and I can now finally share some of it.

Hope you had fun with these and will give the book a gander when it hits the shelves of your favorite local gaming purveyor.
I learned a lot from these assignments in terms of developing my working process. I determined that watercolor on watercolor paper was indeed the best course for me and was the most versatile.
I like the results of these first paintings and the stuff I’m doing now was greatly informed by this project.

Onto the day’s work. I am hooking up my new printer and preparing to print out my first underdrawing.
It should save me a heap of effort in transferring my drawing to a larger board. Fingers crossed!

We just finished recording the North American segment for The Ninja Mountain Podcast.
I’ll be editing that soon. In the meantime, I have work to do!
I had a great time at the Portfolio Review event yesterday that was organized by the New Hampshire Creative Club. I met some great folks in the creative community and received positive feedback on my work from both portfolios. It was very encouraging.
I brought along some of my original fantasy art as a fun addition. So few people actually get to see originals of this type unless they head to conventions.
There are so few of us genre illustrators in New Hampshire, though the number of us does seem to be slowly growing if the new crop of guys graduating from my local art school are any indication. :)
A few fantasy/ sci-fi guys are preparing to enter the industry and I look forward to seeing their work take off.
Time will tell, but I have high hopes for their success.

Tonight I am headed for the New Hampshire Creative Club Annual Portfolio Review.
I will be showing my own portfolio while acting as a guest reviewer as well.
