Snaggle
Late night painting to be followed by more of the same, but I figured a quick warm-up before proceeding would put me in good stead. :)
I am happy to report that spraying 2 coats of acrylic fixative on my watercolors was a success ( see yesterday’s post).
The paint stayed put when I brushed on the gloss medium. Win!
I’ll make that a studio practice from now on. :)

Egads! Where has the time gone?!
There is much painting to do in the meantime. I’ve wrapped up the watercolor stage of my recent assignment and am preparing to move onto the acrylic stage today. I think it’s coming along swimmingly.
I just realized that I could pre-seal the watercolor painting with acrylic spray fixative before laying on the gloss medium. This should hopefully alleviate the smearing that occasionally takes place during this important step.
I hate seeing delicate work getting muddied by the glazing so this should solve that problem admirably.
Onwards to see how this experiment goes. :)

Something a bit sinister for today. Miss Muffett was perhaps not as innocent as the rhyme would indicate….
The weekend draws nigh and I have already made plans to spend every waking minute here in the studio completing work for Paizo.
This is a fun batch I’m working on.
I’ve just about figured out the proper methods for my new professional work and things are starting to speed up some.
Building up experience with the paints is starting to pay off and I am finding far less frustration with my efforts.
This bodes well for future projects. :)

General Bones
Today’s doodle became a character named “General Bones”.
Bit of dark sci-fi stuff seems to have ruled the pen today. :)
Yesterday I scrapped the illustration I was working on. It simply was not working. I have since re-drawn it and am now finishing up the painting and it looks magnitudes of order better. I’m so glad I stepped away from it and struck out on a better path.
It was a Eureka moment for me.
Sometimes you have to abandon a piece and try again. When these things happen, take them as a learning experience and embrace the opportunity to grow in your craft. It may mean a late night, but you will likely be a better illustrator for it.

Today’s sketch turned into a dragon named Sandy.
Go figure. :)
The northeast got clobbered with snow yesterday. I spent most of my production time shoveling several tons of snow so I could get the misses to work.
It’s snowing today as well. Ugh.
Still, I’ve high hopes to get much work done.
Yesterday, I tried light watercolor washes on cold-press illustration board and am so far unimpressed. Ah well.
Think I’ll just seal it off and start in with acrylics to salvage it.
Watercolor paper is seeming more and more to be the best option for the stuff I’ve been doing lately.
Anyway, onwards and upwards. :)

The Boxer
Well, today I spent a bit longer than normal on the warm-up. A little drowsy off the starting blocks today and I was having way too much fun to set this aside. :)
I enjoyed a weekend visit with my friend, Paul “Prof” Herbert.
He has an awesome home studio for which I have developed covetous feelings. :)
I feel somewhat recharged having gotten out of the studio this weekend, so I had better go take advantage of it!
A new week is here and I have a lot of work to do, but first I must shovel the heavy white stuff that fell from the sky last night. Ugh.

Balancing work with play has always been a challenge for me. Work tips the balance far too often for my mental health I think.
These warm-ups have been a tonic for that affliction, but I could certainly do with more time spent in the outside world.
Otherwise I could end up on a city street corner wearing a chicken on my head while singing the “Star-Spangled Banner” in reverse. The tips might be good, but it is probably best to avoid that potentiality…
Back to work.
